Sociodemographic and Obstetric Factors Influencing Perinatal Outcomes in Pregnancy with Reduced Fetal Movement

Background: Reduced fetal movement is a concern during late pregnancy and may indicate fetal compromise. Perinatal outcomes are influenced by maternal characteristics, obstetric factors and fetal surveillance.
Objective: This study evaluated how sociodemographic and obstetric factors affect perinatal outcomes in women with reduced fetal movement.
Methodology: This cross-sectional study was conducted at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Bangladesh Medical University (BMU), Dhaka, from June 2015 to December 2016. A total of 100 women with singleton pregnancies of at least 34 weeks' gestation presenting with reduced fetal movement were included. Participants were categorized into normal and abnormal CTG groups.
Results: Maternal age and socioeconomic status were comparable between groups (p = 0.414 and p = 0.582). Gestational age was lower in the abnormal CTG group (37.7 ± 0.7 vs. 39.2 ± 1.19 weeks; p = 0.001) and labour induction was more frequent in the normal CTG group (32.0% vs. 4.0%; p = 0.001). Emergency caesarean section was higher in abnormal CTG (42.0% vs. 12.0%; p = 0.001). Neonates in the abnormal CTG group had lower APGAR scores at one minute (22.0% vs. 6.0%; p = 0.021), higher NICU admission (36.0% vs. 10.0%; p = 0.002) and lower birth weight (2.10 ± 1.9 vs. 2.87 ± 1.6 kg; p = 0.03).
Conclusion: Integrating sociodemographic and obstetric factors with CTG assessment may improve risk stratification and neonatal outcomes in pregnancies with reduced fetal movements.
