About the Journal
The Bangladesh Journal of Psychology (BJoP), the official publication of the Bangladesh Psychological Association (BPA), is one of the earliest efforts to share psychological research in Bangladesh. It has served as a national platform for empirical and theoretical studies, supporting researchers, educators, and practitioners. Its development reflects both continuity and change, influenced by institutional environments, editorial guidance, and shifting scholarly standards.
Establishment and Early Editorship (1972)
The BJoP began in 1972 with Volume 1, edited by Professor Dr. Muhammad Raushan Ali, then Head of Dhaka University's Psychology Department. It marked a significant advancement in establishing peer-reviewed psychological publications in Bangladesh and offered a dedicated platform for academic research.
Print-Based Publication and Institutional Continuity (1972–2023)
From 1972 to 2023, BJoP was published in print mostly annually, typically in December, with some issues in June depending on editorial and institutional factors. Over five decades, it released 25 volumes, fewer than expected for continuous publication. This reflects gaps, including a long break from 2001–2013 and shorter ones earlier, linked to organizational and contextual challenges. These interruptions didn't diminish the journal's scholarly quality or commitment. Despite these gaps, the Bangladesh Journal of Psychology remained the primary national peer-reviewed psychology journal in Bangladesh, with each revival demonstrating resilience.
Early International Visibility and Indexing Efforts
From the late 1980s to the early 1990s, the journal attained international recognition. During this period, article abstracts were incorporated into the APA PsycINFO database, predominantly through the efforts of Professor Dr. Abdul Khaleque, who edited multiple volumes in the 1990s. Under his guidance, the journal achieved significant milestones, including obtaining an ISSN (1022-7466) in 1995, being listed in Ulrich’s Directory, and securing international dissemination via the Swets Subscription Service. Although coverage by PsycINFO was later discontinued due to publication irregularities, this era signifies the journal’s initial expansion into the global scholarly community and its recognition as a reputable publication.
Transition from Print to Digital Publishing (2024–2025)
In 2024, a major milestone for the journal was its transition from print to online distribution. This was marked by the release of Volume 24, available in both print and digital formats. Volume 24 became the last printed volume and also signaled the beginning of digital access through BanglaJOL. The transition entailed redefining the journal’s scope and strategic objectives under the guidance of Professor Dr. Md. Kamal Uddin, Chief Editor of the BJoP, as well as developing digital publishing workflows in collaboration with Professor Dr. Samsad Afrin Himi. Funding for DOI registration and digital enhancements was generously provided by Professor Dr. Azizur Rahman, then President of the Bangladesh Psychological Association. By 2025, the journal’s transition was complete, with Volume 25 published exclusively online via BanglaJOL, establishing a fully digital publication process.
Publication Regularization and Structural Consolidation (2026 onward)
Following its digital transition, the journal maintained an annual publication schedule throughout 2024–2025 as part of a structured consolidation phase. Beginning in 2026, the Bangladesh Journal of Psychology adopted a regular biannual publication schedule, with issues planned for June and December each year. Consequently, Volume 26, Issue 1 (June 2026) marks the journal’s inaugural issue within a fully established biannual cycle on the BanglaJOL platform, demonstrating a heightened commitment to consistent publication, sustainability, and long-term scholarly continuity.
Current Standing and Future Orientation
Currently, the Bangladesh Journal of Psychology is not indexed in APA PsycINFO. However, since 2024, it has improved its visibility through BanglaJOL, providing open access and increasing discoverability via global search engines. It appears in Google Scholar (https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=SMHKEJ0AAAAJ&hl=en) for citation tracking and is recognized on ResearchGate when authors upload articles, with a dedicated development profile. With a consistent publication schedule, enhanced digital infrastructure, and coordinated oversight, BJoP is strengthening. These efforts lay a solid foundation for future indexing in services like Scopus and align with scholarly standards.
