Abstract

Background and aim End-stage chronic kidney disease is characterized by irreversible loss of kidney function requiring replacement therapy such as hemodialysis, which is considered the most commonly used treatment. Patients treated with hemodialysis face several nutritional, social, and psychological problems. This study was conducted to evaluate the various associations between depression and nutritional and biochemical parameters. Methods The study was conducted among 200 patients treated with hemodialysis in three cities (Kelaa des Sraghna, Kenitra, El Jadida), whose average age was 55,24 ± 15,07 years. Results The results show that 80% of patients suffer from depression, of whom suffer from mild to severe depression (33,5% of patients suffer from mild depression, 23% from moderate depression, and 23,5% from severe depression). The results showed significant associations between marital status, educational level, and occupation in relation to the level of depression (p<0,05), as well as significant associations between fresh fish consumption and depression (0,022), an association between phosphorus intake on hemodialysis days and normal days (p < 0,05), and a significant association between hemoglobin levels and depression (0,005). Conclusions These results show the influence of sociodemographic, nutritional, and biochemical parameters on the psychological state of patients with end-stage renal disease, highlighting the importance of multidisciplinary care to ensure good survival and quality of life for these patients.
