Phytotherapy in pediatric dermatology

Skin has protective, defensive, thermoregulatory, and aesthetic roles to play. Various local and systemic diseases can affect it in all age groups. There is significant morbidity associated that usually also has an impact on the quality of life of the patient. In children, infective and allergic skin conditions predominate. Though western medicine can control and cure these skin ailments, they have the high potential to result in side-effects. The treatment of skin diseases at the primary level includes herbal therapy. Plants and their parts and extracts have been used traditionally to heal diseases of the body, including that of the skin. Phytotherapy has advantages in the form of easy accessibility, easy availability, inexpensiveness and affordability, effectiveness, non-invasive nature, immuno-modulatory, antioxidant, antiinflammatory, microbial properties, and safety. The current review is an attempt to summarize on the various plants that are useful in the management of various skin conditions in children.
