Morphometric Study of Neck-Shaft Angle of Left Humerus in Adult Bangladeshi Population in Digital Radiographs

Abstract

Context: Proper designing of shoulder prosthesis by the ergonomist depends on gender variation of neck-shaft angle of humerus. The present study was conducted to observe the male-female variation of neck-shaft angle of humerus in adult Bangladeshi population in digital radiograph.

Materials and Methods: This study was a cross-sectional analytical study carried out in the Department of Anatomy, Dhaka Medical College, Dhaka, from January 2019 to December 2019. This study was performed on left shoulder joint digital radiographs of 50 males and 50 females attending the Radiology and Imaging Department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Study subjects were selected by convenient purposive sampling method. Standard antero-posterior view of digital radiographs of the left shoulder joint was taken. Different radiographic variables were measured by the computer program ‘MB- Ruler’.

Results: Mean ± SD neck-shaft angle of humerus was 137.54o ± 4.21 and 141.53o ± 7.06 in male and female respectively and the difference was found statistically significant.

Conclusion: The result of the study showed that digital radiographic measurement of neck-shaft angle of humerus significantly varied among adult Bangladeshi male and female.
