Abstract

Linguistics is an ancient branch of knowledge and in modern world linguistics is also a well-known subject of study. In the land of Bangladesh during the second decade of the twentieth century linguistics began its journey as an independent branch of study. Unfortunately, over the last one century the progress and development of linguistics as a scientific study of language in our country is not satisfying. This paper intends to present the result of a survey study to demonstrate the awareness of linguistics in this land. The result shows that regarding linguistics peoples' level of awareness is very low which is indeed a problem in this regard. The paper ends with several recommendations to increase peoples' awareness and to indicate the benefits of practicing linguistics in Bangladesh.
